Victor Wembanyama’s Admirer Nikola Jokic ‘Might Retire in 2027 originally appeared on Athlon Sports.

Victor Wembanyama is expected to be the next best center in the NBA, but for now, that title firmly belongs to Nikola Jokic.

While Jokic is not nearly the same defender that Wembanyama is, he is a top-three rebounder, passer, and scorer. Add in his three MVPs and Finals win with the Denver Nuggets, and it’s hard to rank anyone over him.

Jokic, like most active players, is a well-documented fan of Wembanyama’s. While former players claim that he’s too skinny or shoots 3-pointers too much, current players know how dangerous he is, and how dangerous he will be.

“I think he’s better this year than last year,” said Jokic of Wemby. “I think he’s a special player. I think he’s going to be one of a kind and one that’s going to be remembered forever.”

With Wembanyama’s peak looming and Jokic only 29 years old, fans can enjoy two excellent–and vastly different–centers going to war in their prime for the next several years.

Well, maybe.

Jokic’s demeanor makes fans suspect that he doesn’t actually enjoy being an NBA player, much less a superstar. He tends to shy away from the spotlight and would much rather be racing horses in Serbia than parading through major US cities.

“I’m like, ‘Man, your (extension) is going to be crazy,’ and he was like, ‘You know, Cuz, I honestly think I might retire after this contract,’” revealed DeMarcus Cousins, who played with Jokic in 2022.

Jokic’s retirement, if Cousins is right, would be the most shocking in sports history since Michael Jordan hung them up for the first time.

Fear not, Nuggets fans. There is really no reason to think there is any truth to Cousins’ claims, and Jokic will likely follow the Tim Duncan route of having a long, successful career before disappearing on his own terms.
