Late-night television has lost one of its brightest lights — and Jimmy Kimmel has lost a piece of his heart.
On Monday, Cleto Escobedo III, the beloved bandleader of Jimmy Kimmel Live! and Kimmel’s lifelong friend, passed away at the age of 59. The news sent shockwaves through the entertainment world, but none felt it deeper than Kimmel himself — who opened Tuesday night’s show not with laughter, but with tears.
“We are heartbroken,” Kimmel said, voice breaking as he looked toward the bandstand that had been Cleto’s home for over two decades. “I don’t just mean me or our crew — I mean everyone who ever met him. Cleto wasn’t just the sound of our show. He was the soul.”
A Friendship That Started Before the Fame
Kimmel and Escobedo’s friendship began long before Jimmy Kimmel Live! ever aired. They grew up together in Las Vegas, two kids obsessed with music, comedy, and the dream of making something special one day.
“When we were fifteen, we’d sneak into clubs just to hear live music,” Kimmel recalled, smiling faintly through tears. “He played the saxophone like nobody else — like it was a part of his body. And somehow, even back then, I knew we’d end up doing this together.”
That prophecy came true in 2003 when Jimmy Kimmel Live! debuted on ABC, with Cleto leading the show’s house band, Cleto and the Cletones, alongside his father, Cleto Escobedo Sr. For over twenty years, he provided not only the musical heartbeat of the show but also an unshakable sense of warmth and joy.
“He Was My Compass When Things Got Too Loud”
During his emotional monologue, Kimmel shared intimate moments from behind the scenes — quiet jokes before filming, spontaneous jam sessions, and the countless times Cleto’s laughter defused tension during long, stressful production days.
“He was always the first to arrive and the last to leave. When things got too loud — and they do, in this business — Cleto was my compass. He reminded me that we were just kids from Vegas doing something we loved.”
The studio audience sat in silence as Kimmel wiped away tears, glancing toward the empty space where his friend once stood with his saxophone. “For 21 years, he stood right over there,” he said softly. “And every night, I got to turn and see him smiling. I don’t know how to do this without him.”
Remembered for His Kindness and Groove
Fans and fellow musicians flooded social media with tributes to Escobedo, remembering him not only for his incredible musical talent but also for his easygoing spirit and loyalty. “Cleto had a groove that could lift the room — and a heart that could heal it,” one bandmate wrote.
Celebrities who had performed on Jimmy Kimmel Live! echoed the same sentiment. John Mayer posted, “Cleto made you feel at home. Even if you were nervous, even if you’d never been on TV before — he smiled, played a note, and suddenly everything was okay.”

A Goodbye That Feels Too Soon
As the show ended, Kimmel addressed Cleto’s family — his wife, children, and father — with gratitude and heartbreak.
“You shared him with us for so long, and I’ll never be able to thank you enough. He made us laugh, he made us dance, and he made us better people.”
Then, for the first time in the show’s history, the studio faded to black — no music, no applause. Just silence.

A Legacy That Lives On
Though Cleto Escobedo is gone, his presence remains etched into every note played on Jimmy Kimmel Live! and every laugh shared in that studio.
“Cleto,” Kimmel whispered before the credits rolled, “you were my brother. I’ll see you again — and when I do, bring the sax. I’ll have the jokes.”
