Glory Johnson speaks out about shock split from Brittney Griner, describing how her ex-wife hand-picked a ‘blond, blue-eyed’ sperm donor – before leaving her to raise their premature twin girls alone

And as it turns out, Glory remains confused, too. The new mom has spoken about the split with Cosmopolitan, revealing the nitty-gritty details of her roller coaster relationship with Brittney and her continuing bewilderment over why her wife filed for an annulment just one day after they publicly announced that they were expecting.

Before meeting Brittney, Glory had only ever dated men. She even had a boyfriend when she she was drafted to the Tulsa Shock in Oklahoma in 2012.

That all changed when she met Brittney at a basketball camp in Las Vegas in 2013. She says Brittney was immediately flirty with her, paying her extra attention, before finally putting her arm around her as they watched a show together with a group of friends.

Until then, Glory had always identified as straight, and would normally have shrugged off Brittney’s advances. But she said that moment felt ‘pretty romantic’, so much so that she wasn’t really thinking about the fact that Brittney was a woman.

‘It was really awkward because what do you do when you’ve never been in this situation with a female before?’ she says now.

‘We finally laid down and were about to go to sleep. Of course, there was a little bit more that happened. As I was getting more and more comfortable, more and more was happening.’

They were a couple by the following summer, and things moved quickly from there. In August, the lovebirds went to a party where Brittney had Glory blindfolded, telling her that she was going to give her a lap dance. Instead, when the blindfold was removed, Brittney was down on one knee, proposing.

Glory said yes – but admits that she felt overwhelmed.

‘Was I ready for it? Probably not,’ she says. ‘What am I going to say, no? All the cameras are in my face… [But] I was happy at the same time. It was something that I wanted.’

That nagging feeling was just one of many red flags she seems to have dismissed. She recalls that Brittney’s constant need to be with her felt ‘excessive’, and her new fiancée even convinced her to give up an off-season paycheck playing in Russia in order to follow her to China.

They argued a lot, too – mostly about trust issues. Brittney didn’t always wear her ring and wasn’t up front about how much she communicated with her ex.

This is when Brittney’s sister Judy, who had been watching the scene unfold, called 911. Though she didn’t tell police at the time, Judy knew that Brittney had a gun at home and was afraid that the situation was growing out of control.

Since the incident, more details have come out that weren’t in the police report. Brittney’s other sister, Grace, said Brittney hit Glory with a metal case. She also claims to have seen the gun.

When the police arrived, they carted both women off to jail, shockingly putting them in the same cell, even though they had been arrested for a dispute with each other.

‘Brittney was crying about how happy she was I stuck with her and promising she’d make it worth it. You can call me stupid for believing her, but I trusted this person,’ she recalls.

That same month, Brittney watched on as Glory took a pregnancy test, assuring her that she would still love her even she wasn’t pregnant. Happily for both women, she was.

Their happiness was short-lived. On June 2, Glory gave an interview to SI.com about the domestic dispute, in which she said: ‘Brittney understands why I pled not guilty, and I understand why she pled guilty’.

Though she told Glory it was OK to announce she was expecting a baby on Instagram on June 4, it doesn’t seem that Brittney intended to stick around for the pregnancy.

On June 5, just 28 days after their wedding, Brittney filed for an annulment, claiming she married Glory due to pressure. She also insisted that she had nothing to do with Glory’s IVF procedures and pregnancy.

Later, she revised her annulment filing, taking back what she said about the pregnancy but claiming that Glory had been unfaithful with an old boyfriend – which Glory denies. In fact, all of Brittney’s claims confuse Glory.

‘I don’t understand,’ she says. ‘I want to understand… I have dreams about it sometimes. One dream I had, we sat down and talked about it for the first time.’

Being pregnant alone wasn’t easy. Glory almost miscarried, and last month gave birth to twin girls, Ava Simone and Solei Diem, when she was just five months along. Still, she tried to remain optimistic.

She does still have plenty to worry about, though.

Her babies are slowly gaining weight in the NICU, where they both underwent surgery last week. She is also facing financial struggles, as she is earning only half-pay while on maternity leave from the WNBA.

She has medical bills, wedding pills, and moving bills – her team is relocating to Dallas – to pay, and her request for spousal support was denied by a judge.

‘I can’t do this by myself. I have male friends, sweet guys that are offering to help me, and I’m not handling it well. I’m pushing it away because I don’t trust anybody,’ she says, adding that, despite everything she’s been through, she doesn’t hate Brittney.

‘I hope I get to a point where I can give somebody a fair chance, because I was so trusting before.’
