Marcus Rashford, currently a Manchester United player facing an uncertain future at Old Trafford, has expressed a clear desire to join Barcelona and play alongside their teenage sensation Lamine Yamal. Rashford, who spent the second half of the previous season on loan at Aston Villa, has reportedly fallen out with Manchester United’s head coach Ruben Amorim and is likely to leave the club this summer.
In a recent interview with Spanish YouTube channel XBuyer while on holiday in Marbella, Rashford was asked if he wanted to play with Barcelona’s 17-year-old wonderkid Lamine Yamal. He responded, “Yeah, sure. Everybody in the world wants to play with the best. So hopefully, we’ll see.” He also indicated a preference for playing as a No.9 striker, suggesting he sees himself as a potential successor to Robert Lewandowski at Barcelona.
Rashford praised Yamal highly, stating that what the teenager is doing at such a young age is unprecedented and difficult to put into words. He said Yamal’s mentality and ability to perform at the elite level at 16 or 17 years old is extraordinary and predicted that Yamal will continue to improve significantly in the coming years.
Regarding Yamal’s chances of winning the 2025 Ballon d’Or, Rashford said it depends on the criteria used, but from a pure football ability standpoint, Yamal deserves to win. He also mentioned Ousmane Dembele, who has won the Champions League, as a contender, indicating he would not be disappointed if either player won the award.
Barcelona has shown interest in Rashford for some time, with their sporting director Deco publicly confirming the club “likes” him. However, financial constraints and their current priority to sign Athletic Club winger Nico Williams have delayed any immediate move. Manchester United is reportedly holding out for a transfer fee around £40 million, which Barcelona currently finds too high. There is still hope for a deal if United lowers their asking price before pre-season begins.
Meanwhile, Manchester United has also offered Rashford to Real Madrid, but the Spanish giants have declined, feeling Rashford does not fit their profile for a striker and considering the asking price too steep.
Despite his hopes of moving to Barcelona, Rashford is preparing for the possibility of returning to Manchester United for pre-season training if his future is not resolved soon. He is currently training in Marbella and has no plans to go on strike. United’s financial demands and Rashford’s significant wages complicate the situation, but the club has not fully closed the door on his return.
In summary, Marcus Rashford is hopeful of swapping Manchester United for Barcelona this summer to link up with Lamine Yamal, whom he regards as a future Ballon d’Or contender. However, the transfer remains uncertain due to financial and strategic considerations on both sides, with Rashford’s future still hanging in the balance as pre-season approaches.
