The story of Tupac’s death has been one of many conspiracy theories and this story I’m about to deep dive into is one of the most major ones that has been brought back to light after Keefe D got arrested for the murder of Tupac. Back on September 7th 1996, rewinding back to that night, there are many different sides of the story and many different theories. The questions this documentary is going to try to answer is why did Tupac get killed that night and who put the battery in Keefe D’s back to do it. Enter Sean “Puff Daddy” Combs, better known today as Diddy. In 1993 he formed Bad Boy Records with one of the first signees being The Notorious B.I.G. Tupac at this time had released his second studio album and was becoming a household name.
Tupac and Biggie eventually became friends, often seen together on stage and at events, even freestyling together. However things changed quickly in 1994. On November 30th, Tupac was shot five times at Quad Studios in New York, leading to rumors and speculation. In Tupac’s eyes, Biggie had set him up, forever damaging their relationship and sparking the East Coast vs West Coast rivalry. After the shooting, Tupac faced prison time and turned himself in. While incarcerated, he felt abandoned by those who claimed to support him, including Biggie. Around the same time, Biggie’s song “Who Shot Ya” surfaced, which Tupac took as a diss, further fueling tensions.
Meanwhile, issues between label heads Suge Knight and Diddy escalated, stemming from deeper conflicts. At the 1995 Source Awards, Suge publicly criticized Diddy, intensifying the feud. Later that year, tensions exploded at a nightclub in Atlanta where Suge’s associate Big Jake was fatally shot during a confrontation involving people connected to Diddy. This incident escalated the rivalry into a full-blown war. Tupac later signed with Death Row Records after Suge posted his bail, and tensions continued to rise. Diddy, feeling threatened, increased security and allegedly connected with Keefe D through mutual associates.
According to Keefe D, discussions of violence escalated, including alleged offers of money to harm Suge Knight and Tupac. Over time, multiple confrontations occurred, including fights and escalating hostility. On September 7th 1996, after a Mike Tyson fight in Las Vegas, Tupac and Suge were involved in an altercation with Orlando Anderson. Later that night, Tupac was shot multiple times in a drive-by shooting.
He died six days later. Allegations later surfaced that a bounty had been placed, but evidence remains disputed and unproven. Over the years, various testimonies, interviews, and claims have emerged, including statements from Keefe D alleging a million-dollar hit. However, no definitive proof has tied Diddy to the crime, and he has consistently denied any involvement. Tupac’s family has since pursued further investigation, seeking clarity on long-standing allegations. Despite decades of speculation, the case remains one of hip-hop’s most debated mysteries, with unanswered questions continuing to fuel discussion.
