Six NFL teams don’t pay tribute to Charlie Kirk as others hold moments of silence

Seven home teams around the NFL held moments of silence for Charlie Kirk on Sunday, but the Bengals, Lions, Colts, Vikings, Steelers and Ravens did not.

Kirk, who was 31 years old and a conservative activist, was assassinated on Wednesday while speaking at an on-campus event at Utah Valley University.

During the games Sunday, the Jets, Cardinals, Dolphins, Saints, Titans, Chiefs and Cowboys all held moments of silence for Kirk before their respective opening kickoffs, while the Steelers had flags at half-mast, according to multiple reports.

The NFL held a moment of silence before the Packers’ game against the Commanders on Thursday at Lambeau Field, and in a statement the following day, the league revealed that the individual teams would make decisions on whether to hold moments of rememberence for Kirk moving forward.

“Last night’s moment was the league’s decision,” the league said in a statement. “It’s up to the clubs for this Sunday’s games. There have been a variety of moments of silence and tributes in-stadium and on-air in all games or a game immediately following events that rise to a national level. Clubs also often hold moments following a tragic event that affects their community.

“There have been moments following school shootings or an attack on a house of worship such as the Tree of Life Synagogue in Pittsburgh in 2018. There also have been moments following major international incidents such as Hamas attack on Israel in October 2023 and weather-related incidents such as major hurricanes and fires.”

The Yankees also held a moment of silence for Kirk before their game Thursday.

At the Jets game, photos of Kirk, his wife and their children were shown on the videoboard.

Tyler Robinson, 22, has been identified as Kirk’s alleged assassin, and he’s expected to be charged with aggravated murder.

There are two more NFL games to be played this week, with Buccaneers visiting the Texans and the Chargers heading to Las Vegas to play the Raiders on Monday.
