Cristiano Ronaldo has reacted to the death of his Portugal teammate Diogo Jota, saying it “doesn’t make sense.”

Liverpool star Jota, 28, died in a car accident in Spain on Thursday along with his younger brother, André Silva, a professional soccer player with Portuguese side FC Penafiel.

Local fire officials in Zamora, Spain, said they died when their car caught fire after it left the road.

“It doesn’t make sense,” Ronaldo posted to X, formerly Twitter, originally in Portuguese.

“Just now we were together in the National Team, just now you had gotten married.

“To your family, your wife, and your children, I send my condolences and wish them all the strength in the world. I know you will always be with them.

“Rest in Peace, Diogo and André. We will all miss you.”

Ronaldo had captained the national Portuguese soccer team, in which fellow attacker Jota was a regular fixture.

Together, they won the UEFA Nations League final in June, when Portugal beat Spain to lift the trophy.

Jota had played in the English Premier League for Liverpool since 2020, a club with which he had won the title, the FA Cup, and the League Cup.

He had married his longtime partner Rute Cardoso, the mother of their three children, less than two weeks before his death.

‘Contagious Joy’

Pedro Proença, president of the Portuguese Football Federation (FPF), said everyone at his organization and “all of Portuguese football are completely devastated” by the deaths of the two players.

Proença called Jota “an extraordinary person, respected by all teammates and opponents, someone with contagious joy,” and expressed his “deepest condolences to the family and friends of Diogo and André Jota, as well as to Liverpool FC and FC Penafiel.”

“The Portuguese Football Federation has already requested UEFA to hold a minute of silence this Thursday, before the match between our national team and Spain in the Women’s European Championship,” Proença said.

“We have lost two champions. The loss of Diogo and André Silva is an irreparable one for Portuguese football, and we will do everything we can, every day, to honor their legacy.”

Liverpool Left ‘Devastated’

Liverpool FC in a statement said the club was “devastated” by the news of Jota’s death.

The club continued: “Liverpool FC will be making no further comment at this time and request the privacy of Diogo and Andre’s family, friends, teammates and club staff is respected as they try to come to terms with an unimaginable loss.

“We will continue to provide them with our full support.”

Footage of the scene surrounding the fatal car crash that killed Liverpool star Diogo Jota and his brother Andre Silva has emerged – showing how the car initially left the road.

The crash, which happened in Zamora, northwestern Spain, occurred in the early hours of Thursday morning.

The Spanish Guardia Civil have stated that, as per their initial findings, the car suffered a tyre blowout while overtaking and subsequently left the road.

It then caught fire and, according to witnesses who called the emergency 1-1-2 service, became ‘engulfed in flames’.

Jota, 28, and his 26-year-old brother, who was also a professional footballer, were identified as the victims of the crash.

Tributes have flooded in from across the footballing world and beyond, with Liverpool stating: “Liverpool Football Club are devastated by the tragic passing of Diogo Jota.

“The club have been informed the 28-year-old has passed away following a road traffic accident in Spain along with his brother, Andre.
