In a society that often claims to celebrate diversity and equality, the reality can still be harsh for many. This week, Angel Webb Reese, the mother of WNBA rising star Angel Reese, shared a powerful message that has echoed across the sports world and beyond: “Because she is Black.”

These five words were spoken with deep frustration and pain after Angel Reese’s outstanding dedication and achievements appeared to be overlooked by major media outlets and sports institutions. Despite her significant contributions to women’s basketball and her inspiring journey from college to professional leagues, Reese has received far less recognition than her white counterparts.

Angel Reese, known for her fierce competitive spirit and impressive performances on the court, rose to fame as a key player for Louisiana State University (LSU). She helped lead her team to a national championship in 2023 and has continued to be a strong figure in women’s basketball. Her work ethic, resilience, and leadership have inspired countless young athletes across the country, especially young Black girls who see themselves in her.

However, her mother, Angel Webb Reese, believes that her daughter’s accomplishments are being deliberately underplayed because of her race. In an emotional post on social media, she wrote, “My daughter gives 110% every single game. She trains hard, plays hard, and carries herself with strength and pride. Yet, somehow, her efforts are always minimized or ignored. Why? Because she is Black.”

Many fans and supporters agree with this perspective. Social media has erupted in support of Angel Reese, with hashtags like #RecognizeAngel and #BlackAthletesMatter trending for days. Countless users have pointed out the clear differences in media coverage between Reese and other white athletes with similar or even lesser accomplishments.

“It’s heartbreaking,” one fan tweeted. “Angel Reese has done everything right. She works hard, speaks her mind, and represents her community with pride. But the media only wants to talk about her when there’s controversy.”

This isn’t the first time Angel Reese has faced criticism or been treated unfairly. After LSU’s 2023 championship win, she was heavily criticized for celebrating in a way that many saw as confident and expressive. However, when a white player made a similar gesture in an earlier game, the media praised her as “competitive” and “spirited.”

The double standard is clear, and it’s something Black athletes have been speaking out about for years. From Serena Williams in tennis to Simone Biles in gymnastics, many powerful Black women have had their achievements questioned, diminished, or ignored, simply because they do not fit the traditional mold that the media expects.

Angel Reese has not responded directly to her mother’s statement, but she has continued to perform at a high level and carry herself with grace and confidence. Her silence speaks volumes, and many believe she is letting her game do the talking.

Angel Webb Reese’s message is more than just a mother’s defense of her child—it is a call to action. A call for the media, the fans, and the world to recognize the talent, the dedication, and the humanity of Black athletes who give their all but are still forced to fight for the respect they deserve.
