In a jaw-dropping moment that left both the studio audience and viewers across the nation in stunned silence, actress, comedian, and longtime co-host of The View, Whoopi Goldberg, announced her plans to leave the United States—and revealed that LSU basketball star Angel Reese would be joining her.
The announcement came during Wednesday’s live taping of The View, during a heated segment about race, sports, and the media’s treatment of young Black women in America.
“I’m done,” Goldberg said, her voice sharp with frustration. “This country doesn’t value real talent anymore—especially when it comes in the form of strong, outspoken Black women. So I’m out. And I’m taking Angel Reese with me.”
The statement drew audible gasps from the audience, followed by a stunned silence. Co-hosts Joy Behar and Sunny Hostin sat frozen for a moment before attempting to clarify, thinking perhaps Whoopi was joking. She wasn’t.
“I’m serious,” Goldberg said firmly. “I’ve had conversations. It’s happening.”
A Conversation Turned Cultural Flashpoint
The discussion had begun with a recap of Angel Reese’s recent controversy—after being left off a major sports brand campaign despite her stellar performance in the WNBA and record-breaking college run with LSU. Many fans and media personalities have pointed out that Reese seems to be held to a different standard compared to white athletes like Caitlin Clark.
Goldberg, who has long championed fairness and inclusion in entertainment and sports, erupted in defense of Reese.
“Angel’s got talent, confidence, and charisma—and for that, she gets torn apart,” Goldberg said. “Meanwhile, others are celebrated for doing half as much.”
That’s when she dropped the bombshell.
“I’ve had it with this double standard. I’ve had it with the disrespect. I’ve had it with the hypocrisy. I’m not just talking about leaving The View—I’m talking about leaving America.”
“She’s Coming With Me”
When asked if Angel Reese had actually agreed to this international exit plan, Goldberg claimed that she and the young star had spoken privately in recent weeks.
“She’s tired too,” Goldberg said. “She’s smart. She knows this system wasn’t built for women like her to thrive. So yeah—we’re planning a new chapter. A new country. A fresh start.”
Reese has yet to publicly confirm Goldberg’s statement, but her camp released a short statement later in the day:
“Angel has always admired Whoopi’s strength and wisdom. She is exploring international opportunities and supports all women who fight for dignity and respect.”
Mixed Reactions Online
Predictably, the internet exploded.
Within minutes, hashtags like #WhoopiLeaves, #AngelReese, and #RespectBlackWomen began trending on X (formerly Twitter). Thousands expressed shock, disbelief, and—in many cases—support.
“Honestly? Let them go where they’re valued,” one user posted. “America keeps asking for excellence but punishes it when it doesn’t come in the ‘right’ package.”
Others, however, accused Goldberg of being dramatic or even unpatriotic.
“If Whoopi wants to leave, let her,” wrote conservative commentator Matt Walsh. “No one’s stopping her. But dragging Angel Reese into it? That’s absurd.”
Still, prominent figures quickly came to Goldberg and Reese’s defense.
“When women speak truth, they get dismissed as emotional,” said Ava DuVernay. “Whoopi is not emotional—she’s exhausted. And she’s right.”
A Pattern of Frustration
This isn’t the first time Whoopi Goldberg has voiced dissatisfaction with the state of American culture and media. Over the years, she’s been candid about the challenges she’s faced in Hollywood, especially as a Black woman who refuses to conform to expectations.
In 2022, she was briefly suspended from The View over comments regarding the Holocaust, which sparked a complex and often contentious debate about race, identity, and historical memory. Goldberg returned to the show but has remained openly critical of how quickly powerful voices—especially women of color—are silenced or sidelined.
As for Angel Reese, the 22-year-old has become both a symbol of rising Black excellence in sports and a lightning rod for criticism. From being mocked for her “You can’t see me” taunt to being scrutinized for her every move on and off the court, Reese has often found herself in the middle of national conversations about race, gender, and sportsmanship.
What Comes Next?
While Goldberg didn’t specify exactly where she plans to move, sources close to her say she’s exploring options in Europe and the Caribbean. “She’s looking at countries that celebrate artistry, expression, and diversity—without trying to sanitize it,” a friend of Goldberg’s told Variety.
Whether or not Angel Reese follows through on leaving the U.S. remains uncertain. But Goldberg’s announcement has already reignited conversations about how Black women in America are treated in both sports and media.
