The most touching moment at the World Cup: Diogo Jota’s parents choked back tears as their late son was honored.
The Portuguese national team and the World Cup held a special tribute to the late Diogo Jota.
The opening match of the Portuguese national team at the FIFA World Cup 2026 against the Democratic Republic of Congo was not just a sporting event, but also deeply emotional. In the stands of the stadium in Houston, Joaquim and Isabel Silva – the parents of the late striker Diogo Jota – were moved to tears as tens of thousands of spectators and organizers performed a special tribute to their son.
Just before kick-off, in the solemn atmosphere of the national anthem, images of Diogo Jota were respectfully projected onto the large screens in the stadium. Television cameras immediately captured the tearful moment of the late player’s parents. Spectators in the stadium also rose to their feet and gave a long round of applause to remember the talented but ill-fated star of Portuguese football and Liverpool FC.

This moving event took place nearly a year after the horrific tragedy in the summer of 2025, when Diogo Jota and his younger brother Andre Silva tragically died in a fatal car accident. The sudden death of the striker, born in 1996, at the peak of his career, left immeasurable grief among football fans worldwide.
In this 2026 World Cup campaign, Diogo Jota’s presence continues to be felt by Portugal in very special ways. In memory of their former teammate, all Portuguese players are wearing a special wristband in the traditional blue and red colors, presented by the Prime Minister of Portugal, Luis Montenegro. This wristband, approved by FIFA, bears the names of all current team members alongside Diogo Jota’s.
Earlier, head coach Roberto Martínez also announced the decision to include the former Liverpool striker in the list of “honorary members” of the World Cup squad. The Spanish strategist emotionally shared that Jota is a “lighthouse” and a solid source of moral support for the entire team at this year’s tournament.

Immediately after scoring the opening goal for Portugal, the players celebrated together by raising their hands to the sky, a gesture of tribute to their late teammate. Although Diogo Jota is no longer with us, he will always be an inseparable part of Portugal’s journey to conquer the World Cup.
