In December 2025, shocking videos
flooded social media. A 36-year-old man,
unrecognizable, gaunt, filthy, digging
in the dirt behind a 7-Eleven in
California. But this wasn’t just anyone.

This was a Nickelodeon star who lit up
the afternoons of millions of kids in
the 2000s. There’s a disease so cruel,
it makes the brain refuse its own cure.
a condition where family members beg for
help. Former castmates offer treatment,
specialists prepare beds at clinics, and
the person says no. Not because they
don’t need it, but because their mind
can’t see that they’re sick.
Tyler Chase has been fighting this
reality for over a decade. Bipolar
disorder and schizophrenia at the same
time. medications that worked until he
stopped taking them. A mother who shut
down fundraising campaigns because she
knew money would only fuel the
addiction. A father who fought for 10
years and watched every attempt crumble.
How did a child who made millions laugh
become invisible on the sidewalks?
Why did an entire system fail to save
him? What happens when Hollywood
discards those who no longer shine? And
most importantly, how can someone be
surrounded by love, resources, and
opportunities
and still refuse everything? Before we
answer, we need to go back to the
beginning. Because Tyler Chase’s story
didn’t start on the streets of
Riverside. It started much earlier when
a kid from Arizona earned his place on
TV, and nobody imagined the price he
would pay for it. Tyler Curtis Menddees
was born on September 6th, 1989 in
Arizona to Joseph Menddees Jr. and Paula
Moio. His childhood was marked by his
parents’ separation when he was still
very young. The family eventually moved
to the Los Angeles County area in
California, where the Hollywood dream
seemed closer, but also more cruel.
Unlike many children who dream of the
spotlight, Tyler didn’t grow up
surrounded by opportunities. There were
no agents knocking on doors, no elite
acting school. What he had was natural
talent and perfect timing. In the early
2000s, while still a teenager, he landed
his first role on television. And then
came the big moment, Ned’s Declassified
School Survival Guide. Aired on
Nickelodeon between 2004 and 2007. The
series followed the adventures of Ned
Bigby and his friends Cookie and Mo as
they navigated the hilarious and
dramatic challenges of middle school.
Tyler played Martin Quirley, the
school’s silent genius, a character who
wasn’t the protagonist, but was
impossible to ignore.
