For decades, Tupac Shakur’s name has carried an almost sacred weight in hip hop – his words, his image, even the jewelry he wore are considered untouchable relics. But now, nearly 30 years after his murder, a single gold chain has sparked a storm of fury, pulling Drake into a scandal that has left fans divided, insiders furious, and Suge Knight himself calling foul.
A Chain With History Or A Fake With Hype?
Drake proudly flaunted what he claimed was an original Death Row Records chain once worn by Tupac on the cover of his iconic 1996 album All Eyez On Me. Purchased from celebrity collector Alexander Bitar, the chain engraved with “All Eyez On YOU 1996” was presented online like a prized trophy.
But almost immediately, questions arose. Tupac’s brother Mopreme Shakur blasted Drake, saying the chain should never have left the family’s possession. “That’s our legacy – our blood. My man should think harder about his moves,” he fumed.
And then came Suge Knight, the former Death Row boss who claims he personally gave Tupac the chain back in 1995. His verdict? Brutal: “That’s not a Death Row chain. It’s fake. They scammed him.”
Drake in the Crossfire
For Drake, this was meant to be a tribute. The rapper has long idolized Tupac, spending over $1 million in 2023 at a Sotheby’s auction for a ruby-and-gold crown ring once worn by the legend. But now, instead of reverence, he’s facing ridicule accused of either being tricked by a collector or deliberately buying into controversy to align himself with 2Pac’s myth.
Social media exploded, with fans posting side by side comparisons of the chain, debating whether Drake was “disrespected” or simply “desperate to connect with Pac’s legacy.”
The Family vs. The Industry
Mopreme’s anger isn’t just about authenticity, it’s about ownership. “All of Pac’s things should be with us,” he insisted, calling the chain’s sale yet another example of the industry profiting off his brother’s memory while the family is left behind.
But Suge Knight’s claim of fraud only deepens the mystery. Did Drake really get duped with a counterfeit? Or is the chain real just carrying ghosts too heavy for anyone outside Pac’s circle to hold?
A Legacy That Still Burns
What’s undeniable is the emotional weight behind every piece of Tupac’s legacy. Nearly three decades after his death, fans still fight over his lyrics, his life, and now his jewelry.
Drake, meanwhile, remains silent. Neither he nor Bitar have addressed the allegations, leaving the world to wonder: did he unknowingly buy a fake, or is this just another chapter in the endless drama surrounding Tupac’s legend?
One thing is certain Tupac may be gone, but his shadow still looms so large that even the biggest names in music risk being burned when they touch it.
