While it was supposed to be just a preseason game, by the time the final whistle blew in Charlotte, it was clear that Shedeur Sanders wasn’t treating anything like it didn’t count. Then, off the field, Sanders made an even bigger play, and NBA legend Shaquille O’Neal had no words, literally.
O’Neal, not one to stay quiet when something moves him, simply reposted the video, originally shared by Snoop Dogg on his Instagram story. No caption, or emojis, just the clip. The video showed Shedeur Sanders not on a field, but in a Cleveland neighborhood, one recovering from a devastating apartment fire, surrounded by smiles, food trucks, and kids playing football. The caption read, “The side of Shedeur Sanders the media doesn’t want you to see…”
“More than 100 people displaced,” reported a local Cleveland news anchor. “But now if you look around, 100 people are out here. Everyone has a smile on their face. I don’t know if you can see in the distance, but Shedeur Sanders is out here playing football with members of this community on the other side of this valley. There’s food trucks, different games, inflatables, free haircuts…”
This was not, fanfare, there was no press conference. According to members of Shedeur’s team, it all came together in just five days.

“All of this is free,” the reporter added. “They just wanted this to be a fun, uplifting community event for these people that truly have been through so much.” Sanders himself didn’t make it about him.
“Of course, everybody know about the situation, everything that happened here and I was out of town when it happened,” Shedeur said. “So I was able to put things together, structure things the best we could in a small amount of time. We had to make sure everybody’s accommodated. It’s bigger than football, you know, like it’s bigger than football here.”
He’s only just arrived in Northeast Ohio, but the Browns rookie quarterback has already hosted multiple community events across Cleveland, showing up, not just as a player, but as a neighbor. One woman at the event, who said she’d lived in the area her whole life, told reporters she’d never seen anything like it.
James sends warning to critics
If Shaq responded with silence, LeBron James came with fire. During Sanders’ standout preseason debut, where he went 14-for-23 for 138 yards and two touchdowns in the Browns’ 30–10 win over the Panthers, the NBA great wasn’t just watching.
“That young 🤴🏾 looking good out there! @ShedeurSanders Keep going UP!!! HEAD down on the grind and HEAD high to the most high 🙌🏾🫡,” LeBron posted on X. But he wasn’t done.
When critics downplayed the performance, especially the usual “it’s only preseason” crowd, James dropped the hammer, “And I don’t wanna hear that ‘it’s only preseason’ bs. Cause if he was out there not going in y’all would be on his ass about it! So give credit and grace lames. 🤷🏾♂️” For those keeping score, that’s Akron’s own LeBron James, a man who knows pressure better than anyone, standing 10 toes down behind the rookie QB from Colorado.
And this wasn’t just support from afar. James has followed Shedeur since his college days under Deion Sanders, and clearly sees something more than just highlight throws.
Sanders’ 75-yard TD dime at Browns minicamp already had fans buzzing. But this moment, the postgame community event, showed the other side. On the field, Shedeur Sanders is fighting for a starting job with Cleveland. Off the field, he’s already won over a city that doesn’t hand out respect easily.
And when two of the biggest names in NBA history, LeBron James and Shaquille O’Neal, stop what they’re doing to highlight both the arm and the heart of a fifth-round NFL rookie, you know something real is happening. Cleveland’s seen legends rise before. Now, another one might be lacing up just across town.
