Chaos, private life over fame, and family always placed above the spotlight. The world sees a basketball giant, but in reality, standing before them is a man who simply wants peace, his horses, and his home. But before he earned that quiet life, where did Nikola Jokić truly begin?
Nikola Jokić was born on February 19, 1995, in Sombor, a small town in northern Serbia. He grew up in a modest two-bedroom apartment with his parents, grandmother, and two brothers, Strahinja and Nemanja. From an early age, family was the center of his life, and basketball became a natural escape. Both of his brothers were strong players in Serbia — Nemanja later played at Detroit Mercy, CW Post, and even briefly competed for the Scranton Wilkes-Barre Steamers in the Premier Basketball League. His family also had connections to well-known athletes, such as former NBA player Darko Miličić, giving Jokić early exposure to the world of professional basketball.
Outside of basketball, Jokić had a deep passion for horse racing, competing as an amateur and maintaining this hobby well into adulthood — a testament to his discipline and multifaceted personality.
Jokić began training professionally with Mega Vizura’s youth team in 2012. He quickly stood out due to his skill, vision, and exceptional basketball IQ. In 2013, he made his debut for Mega Vizura’s senior team, showcasing a rare combination of size, mobility, and passing ability — all signs of the NBA star he would become.

Despite low expectations heading into the 2014 NBA Draft, his talent didn’t go unnoticed. Jokić was selected 41st overall in the second round by the Denver Nuggets. He debuted on October 28, 2014, and in his rookie season averaged 7 points and 3.7 rebounds, quietly making his mark as a “versatile weapon.”
His breakout came during the 2017–2018 season when he averaged 16.7 points, 9.3 rebounds, and 4.9 assists. He was named to the NBA All-Rookie Team and quickly became known for his unselfish playmaking and elite court vision — traits that set him apart from traditional centers.
By the 2018–2019 season, Jokić earned his first All-Star selection and led Denver to the Western Conference Semifinals. He continued rising, winning back-to-back MVPs in 2020 and 2021 with superb numbers — including 26.4 points, 10.8 rebounds, and 8.3 assists in his second MVP season. He guided Denver to their first Western Conference Finals appearance since 2009, solidifying himself as one of the league’s top superstars.
The peak came in 2023 when Jokić led the Nuggets to their first-ever NBA championship, defeating the Miami Heat in five games. He was named Finals MVP, becoming the lowest draft pick ever to win the award — a testament to his intelligence, consistency, and unmatched vision.
Internationally, Jokić has represented Serbia multiple times, contributing to major victories on the global stage. His journey — from a humble childhood in Sombor to the top of the NBA — is a story of resilience, talent, and the power of family.
Life at his Colorado mansion
After reaching historic achievements, Jokić now lives in a luxurious Colorado mansion that reflects both his success and understated elegance. Inside, the home impresses with a spiral stone-and-iron staircase, towering ceilings, a double-sided fireplace, and crystal chandeliers. The primary bedroom feels like a resort suite, featuring electric curtains, a dual-sided fireplace, a safe, and ultra-premium his-and-hers bathroom-dressing rooms.
The mansion includes 5 bedrooms, 10 bathrooms, 2 internal guest suites, and multiple family areas for long-term visitors. The kitchen is professionally outfitted with Wolf appliances, two Sub-Zero refrigerators, and a wet bar. Outside sits a luxury pool, full-service pool house, and a DCS outdoor grilling station.
The lower level features a 12-seat theater, gym, bar, two laundry rooms, additional bedrooms, and a private suite with its own fireplace. All three floors are connected by a personal elevator for maximum comfort.
