Luka Doncic is entering a new chapter with the Los Angeles Lakers. After being traded from Dallas and signing a major contract, the 26-year-old guard is preparing for his first full season in Lakers purple and gold.
Amidst the changes, he remains grounded in some timeless words from Kobe Bryant, who cautioned him during their first meeting before his rookie NBA season.
The advice was unmistakable. “Watch out, you’re European. They’re gonna be after you.” It was a simple warning, but one that Doncic says holds true even today.
In an interview with The Wall Street Journal, he reflected on that exchange with Bryant, saying, “I remember meeting him the first time before I started my NBA season, there was one thing he said, ‘Watch out, you’re European. They’re gonna be after you.’ And he was right.”
Surreal moments and a bond with a legend
What makes the memory even more striking is the way Kobe reinforced that reality. Doncic recalled another moment that surprised him: “First of all, he was trash talking me in my language so I kinda was surprised,” Doncic said.
“I just looked over and it was Kobe – a surreal moment that I’ll never forget.”
It’s not just nostalgia. The warning from Bryant came at a vulnerable point-just as Doncic was stepping into the brightest lights of professional basketball.
He had just been drafted, was about to face the toughest competition of his life, and was already drawing eyes not just for his European accomplishments but also for what he might-and would-become in the NBA.
Beyond the personal reflections, the backdrop to this past offseason has done more than remind fans of what he’s overcome. The Lakers organization has retooled around him.
After the blockbuster trade that sent him from the Mavericks, the front office added players like Deandre Ayton, Marcus Smart, and Jake LaRavia, aiming to support both Doncic and LeBron James in a push for championship contention.
Meanwhile, Doncic’s new three-year, $165 million contract extension, inked in August, signals the franchise’s long-term belief in him. And while his time in Slovenia’s national squads and EuroBasket ended earlier than hoped, his international experience remains part of his journey.

Challenging the Kobe legacy in L.A
Kobe Bryant’s legacy looms large in Los Angeles. For Doncic, the chance to carry forward that competitive edge and mental toughness is more than symbolic-it’s essential.
Bryant didn’t simply warn; he provided a lens through which Doncic now views challenges, scrutiny, and expectations.
Heading into the 2025-26 season, Doncic has reasons to believe this could be his most important yet. Amid high expectations, a refreshed roster, and his own evolving game, the path forward is steep-but the warnings from Lakers’ legend have prepared him for it.
As the Lakers open their campaign, each game becomes a test not just of skill, but of mindset. When Bryant said “they’re gonna be after you,” he meant pressure, critics, and comparisons-and Doncic appears ready to meet it, not with fear, but with the kind of resolve that legends respect.
