Heated Judiciary Hearing: Jamie Raskin Confronts Attorney General Pam Bondi Over Epstein Records

WASHINGTON — A tense House Judiciary Committee hearing erupted into one of the most dramatic confrontations on Capitol Hill this year, as Representative Jamie Raskin sharply questioned Attorney General Pam Bondi about the Department of Justice’s handling of records connected to Jeffrey Epstein.
The hearing, originally intended to review the Justice Department’s release of millions of documents tied to the Epstein investigation, quickly escalated into a heated exchange over whether key evidence involving Donald Trump had been properly acknowledged or dismissed.
Lawmakers from both parties described the atmosphere as unusually combative.
Dispute Over the Meaning of “Evidence”

The confrontation began after Bondi testified that “no evidence exists” in the Epstein files linking Trump to criminal conduct.
Raskin and several other members of the committee immediately challenged that statement, citing internal Department of Justice materials and FBI interview records that they said referenced allegations involving Trump dating back decades.
Committee members argued that while allegations do not amount to proof of a crime, they still qualify as evidence that investigators reviewed.
“The issue is not whether there has been a conviction,” Raskin said during the hearing. “The issue is whether evidence exists that investigators considered.”
Bondi maintained that the materials referenced by lawmakers did not constitute verified proof of wrongdoing.
Victims and Transparency Concerns

The hearing became even more emotionally charged because several survivors connected to Epstein’s trafficking network were present in the room.
Lawmakers criticized the Justice Department’s document release process, arguing that certain sensitive details related to victims had not been adequately protected while other information remained heavily redacted.
Some members of Congress called for greater transparency in the handling of Epstein-related records, emphasizing that the case continues to raise difficult questions about accountability and the treatment of victims.
Bondi did not directly respond to some of those criticisms during the hearing, which further intensified tensions between lawmakers and the Justice Department.
Broader Questions About DOJ Independence

Beyond the Epstein documents, committee members also questioned whether the Justice Department had faced political pressure in its decision-making.
Several lawmakers pointed to recent legal disputes involving the department and requested clarification on how prosecutorial decisions were being made.
Bondi defended the department’s work, stating that prosecutors continue to follow the law and that decisions are made based on available evidence and legal standards.
Calls for Further Investigation
In the aftermath of the hearing, Representatives Ted Lieu and Dan Goldman said they would request an independent review of Bondi’s testimony.
The lawmakers argued that an outside investigation might be necessary to determine whether statements made during the hearing accurately reflected the contents of Justice Department records.
Such a review, if approved, would likely involve comparing Bondi’s testimony with millions of pages of documents tied to the Epstein investigation.
A Controversy That Continues to Grow
The Epstein case has remained one of the most controversial investigations in recent American history, in part because numerous powerful individuals were connected to Epstein’s social and financial networks.
While the hearing did not resolve the disputes surrounding the records, it underscored the continuing political and legal battles over how the case has been handled.
For the Justice Department, the debate now extends beyond the Epstein files themselves to broader questions about transparency, institutional credibility, and the balance between protecting investigations and informing the public.
As congressional inquiries continue, the confrontation between lawmakers and the Justice Department appears far from over.
