The latest update on the Canadian star who suffered a horrific leg fracture at the World Cup has left the entire stadium in stunned silence.

Horrific leg fracture at the World Cup, Canadian star still smiles brightly in hospital bed to reassure fans.

Just one day after the injury that silenced the entire stadium, Ismaël Koné reappeared in hospital with an optimistic smile. The image of the Canadian star being visited by his teammates quickly moved fans.

If there was one moment that caused the most heartbreak for Canadian fans since the start of the 2026 World Cup, it was undoubtedly the moment Ismaël Koné collapsed on the pitch during the match against Qatar. The 24-year-old midfielder became the victim of an extremely dangerous tackle from behind by Qatari player Assim Madibo in the 53rd minute. The sound of a bone breaking was reportedly heard right on the BC Place pitch, causing many players to immediately clutch their heads in horror.

Koné lay writhing in pain, while his teammates stood around with distraught eyes. Some players even broke down in tears out of worry. As he was being carried off on a stretcher and given oxygen, the Canadian star still managed to wave to the cheering crowd amidst the encouraging shouts of tens of thousands of fans in the stadium.

Many feared that Koné’s 2026 World Cup campaign was officially over. However, less than 24 hours after that heartbreaking moment, the midfielder born in 2002 brought the first good news to his fans.

On his personal page, center-back Moïse Bombito posted a photo of himself with Koné at the hospital. In the photo, the Canadian player is lying in a hospital bed but still smiling brightly and posing optimistically for the camera.

No longer showing the pain he displayed on the pitch, Koné displayed an incredibly strong spirit despite having just suffered one of the most serious injuries of this year’s World Cup. The photo was quickly shared widely on social media. Thousands of Canadian fans left encouraging comments, wishing the midfielder a speedy recovery and a return to the field.

According to coach Jesse Marsch, Koné will undergo surgery in the near future. However, the American strategist affirmed that his player is being cared for by a top-tier medical team. While Koné is hospitalized, his teammates also haven’t forgotten to offer him encouragement.

In the 6-0 victory against Qatar, Nathan Saliba – who came on as a substitute for Koné – scored a beautiful free-kick goal. Immediately afterwards, the midfielder ran to the technical area to receive a jersey bearing Koné’s name and held it up high in front of the stands as a tribute to his unfortunate teammate.

Notably, the player who caused the injury, Assim Madibo, also appeared extremely distraught. After receiving the red card, the Qatari midfielder was seen crying as he left the field. According to coach Marsch, Madibo went directly to the Canadian dressing room to apologize to Koné after the match.

However, that cannot change the fact that Canada has just lost one of its most important players. Koné was having the best season of his career with Sassuolo and was considered a key player in the Canadian midfield for the 2026 World Cup.

But amidst the worries about his future, the image of the 24-year-old midfielder smiling in his hospital bed provided great encouragement to fans. The World Cup may be over for Koné, but his fighting spirit certainly remains intact.
