Legendary Thierry Henry exposes Ronaldo: “Selfish”
Thierry Henry criticizes Cristiano Ronaldo, claiming he is harming the Portuguese national team.
Portugal’s disappointing 1-1 draw against the Democratic Republic of Congo in their opening match of the 2026 World Cup not only raised concerns about points but also sparked heated debate surrounding superstar Cristiano Ronaldo. Despite officially making history as the oldest player (41 years and 132 days old) to start a World Cup, CR7’s performance received a “cold shower” from football legends, especially former star Thierry Henry.
Appearing as a pundit on Fox Sports, Thierry Henry didn’t hesitate to dissect the Portuguese striker’s playing style, asserting that Ronaldo’s individual goal-scoring desire was inadvertently disrupting the team’s collective spirit and harming the squad.
To support his claim, Henry analyzed a pivotal tactical situation in the 68th minute of the match. When full-back João Cancelo was pushing forward to build up play, instead of making a smart run towards the penalty area to stretch the opposing defense and create space for Bruno Fernandes to cut in, Ronaldo chose to move across Fernandes’ path to claim the ball for himself. The situation ended with a shot that went wide of the post, much to the disappointment of his teammates.
“One extremely important thing I want television viewers to understand: The team needs goals, not you personally,” Henry frankly criticized. “Because of his own desire to score, Ronaldo stepped on Bruno Fernandes’ space. If he had moved intelligently towards the penalty area, Bruno would have had an easy close-range tap-in. That selfishness made it much easier for the opposing defense,” Thierry Henry shared.

Sharing the same opinion as the former Arsenal striker, legend Zlatan Ibrahimovic also stated that the basic task of a center forward in that situation is to move from the near post to the far post to create space for the second line to move forward. Ronaldo’s deliberate attempt to contest space with his teammates was a fundamental tactical mistake.
The post-match statistics are also working against the 41-year-old superstar. Throughout the 90 minutes on the pitch in Houston, Ronaldo was unable to find the back of the net and didn’t even manage a single shot on target. The lackluster draw in the opening match raises a big question for the Portuguese national team coach: Is continuing to keep Ronaldo in the starting position the biggest obstacle on the journey to conquering the World Cup for the golden generation of “European Selecao”?
