Hundreds attend Eminem’s 17th annual winter coat giveaway

Over 1,000 coats distributed to people in need

DETROIT – Hundreds of Detroit families braved frigid temperatures Saturday morning, lining up for Eminem’s annual coat giveaway — a 17-year tradition that continues to meet growing community needs.

More than 1,000 brand-new winter coats were distributed to local children as part of the initiative spearheaded by Eminem, transforming the Bel Air Luxury Cinema movie theater into a winter outreach center.

“I’ve seen it grow from Eminem’s idea to this,” said event organizer Dody Johnson.

The event drew longtime supporters including Swifty McVay of D12, who emphasized Eminem’s consistent commitment to the community.

“He’s always had his heart on his sleeve. This is big for him cause he’s been super generous since the day I met him,” McVay said.

For local parents like Nathan Moore, who brought his children to the event, the giveaway addresses a critical need.

“It’s cold out here. You got a thousand kids in hoodies, nobody wearing coats, so this is a good idea,” Moore said.

Johnson highlighted the genuine necessity behind the annual event, noting that some families arrived wrapped in blankets due to lack of proper winter wear.

“It’s not just because it’s free — it’s because there’s really a need,” she said.

The foundation partnered with Forman Mills to provide the new winter coats, maintaining their commitment to quality in serving the community’s needs.

For McVay, the impact is evident in the immediate response from families.

“I love looking forward to it, to see their smiles and excitement. It just brings me joy,” he said.
