Former Miami Dolphins head coach Mike McDaniel said he is not trying to fix Justin Herbert in the Los Angeles Chargers. Because he already considers him a top-tier level quarterback.Instead, McDaniel intends to help the quarterback reach even greater heights by improving the offense’s efficiency and speeding up the quarterback’s decision-making skill.“It wasn’t like I was trying to fix something that was like, ‘This is broke,’” Mike McDaniel said via Chargers’ Eric Smith.“We’re looking at a player that is very, very talented and top tier in achievement his whole career.
[We want to] try to take him to the next level where he can own certain things,and really get the ball to his teammates as fast as possible and help the efficiency of the offense.”
Justin Herbert is open to new offensive adjustments
Mike McDaniel admitted that Justin Herbert has been receptive to a mechanical adjustment: switching his front foot to the left.The new OC heaped praise on the signal caller, saying the latter immediately embraced his coaching suggestions.The quarterback is eager to make changes that could enhance his performance.The OC believes that the signal caller’s willingness to refine longstanding habits creates an opportunity for a much higher-level play.“I don’t mandate it, but with Justin [Herbert], I really just showed him where I thought it would be advantageous,” Mike McDaniel said.“He didn’t blink for a second and was excited to attack it.When you have players like that that go after their craft in that way, you can do things,change things that have been standardized in their game for years, and you can do it with reasonable expectations and higher performance.”Was Tua Tagovailoa reluctant to change? Justin Herbert said that he has fully embraced the new style brought on by Mike McDaniel.The quarterback said the OC fully explained his vision for playing the QB position to him.The OC also told him why it could be the most effective approach for him.The QB was immediately sold on the new idea. He has taken as many reps as he could.And he feels that the transition has been smooth and effective so far.“Mike [McDaniel] just talked about how he saw the quarterback position being played and why he thought that was the best way,” Justin Herbert said.“Jumped on board and got as many reps as we could, and it’s been going good so far.”
