‘You’re Talking About Me:’ Anthony Mackie Reveals How Eminem Made 8 Mile Rap Battle Personal

Mackie made his debut in 2002’s 8 Mile, which starred Eminem in the leading role. The musical drama is a semi-autobiographical story, following Eminem’s Jimmy “B-Rabbit” Smith, an aspiring rapper who attempts to win a rap contest to find a better life. Mackie played his opponent, Clarence aka Papa Doc, the leader of the Free World group, and revealed during an appearance on the Pivot Podcast that Eminem used his personal details during their rap battle at the end of the film.
Before they joined the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Jeremy Renner and Anthony Mackie starred together in one of the greatest war films of the 2000s.
8 Mile drew inspiration from Eminem’s real life, but the rapper also used information from Anthony Mackie’s real life. Around the 12:00 mark, Mackie addressed the film, revealing the rapper told him he didn’t understand why their characters were beefing.
“We’re doing the movie, and you know Eminem is just such a brilliant dude,” Mackie explained. “We’re on set one day, and he’s like, ‘Yo, it don’t make sense we’re beefing.’” And Mackie agreed. Eminem told him, “I need something on you.” The actor explained that the two talked for “two hours” where Mackie shared details about his life before going their separate ways.
Mackie further noted that his shocked facial expressions were real because he didn’t expect Eminem to go after him. “You’re an as—-e, Eminem!” the actor jokingly added. “I’m like, ‘I’m gonna fight this mother——–!’ I’m like, ‘Yes my parents are still married!’” Eminem used details about his life, including that Mackie graduated from Julliard’s drama division in 2001.
8 Mile Was A Massive Success
Both Eminem and Anthony Mackie made their acting debut in the 2002 musical drama 8 Mile. The movie was directed by Curtis Hanson from a script by Scott Silver, but other critically acclaimed directors, including Quentin Tarantino and Danny Boyle, were considered for the role. Eminem felt he had a stronger connection with Hanson.
The movie also won an Oscar for Best Original Song for the iconic “Lose Yourself,” but Eminem skipped the ceremony. Following the role, Mackie received offers for other similar roles, but he turned them down. He later agreed to play Tupac Shakur in 2009’s Notorious.
