“WNBA games used to be quiet, relaxing places where you could bring your laptop and get some work done,” Griner told reporters. “But now, it’s completely different. There are large crowds showing up, cheering loudly. Some of them are yelling crazy stuff about what they’re seeing. They’re putting pressure on us to score, like we’re here solely for their entertainment. And that’s really gross.”

Griner went on to say that the noise and overwhelming expectations from the crowd have made the playing environment “toxic.” “I saw a man with his daughter in the stands. Both of them were yelling. I couldn’t make out what they were saying, but it was either criticism of my performance or some light racism. Definitely one of the two.”

Her comments quickly drew attention and sparked controversy. Some argue she’s being overly sensitive to the growing fanbase and attention the league is receiving – much of which Caitlin Clark has helped bring in. Others believe her words reflect a more honest perspective on the increasing pressure female athletes face as women’s sports step further into the spotlight. As of now, Caitlin Clark has not issued any official response to Griner’s remarks.
