It was just another typical day for Vernell Varnado, also known as Snoop Dogg’s father. He was running errands around his hometown, handling some personal matters. Having long retired from his job, he still relished the freedom that came with his leisurely schedule. However, his day was about to take an unexpected turn with lasting effects.
As Vernell exited a local grocery store, he was approached by two police officers in a squad car. Initially, he assumed it was a routine stop, perhaps a simple question about something he wasn’t even aware of. But what transpired next would prove to be anything but a casual interaction.
One of the officers, a young man with an overly confident demeanor, stepped out of the car and immediately began questioning Vernell in a way that felt wrong. “Hey, you! What are you doing here?” the officer snapped, his tone sharp and unnecessarily aggressive.
Vernell, a man seasoned by life and experienced enough to handle moments like this, took a brief pause. “Just picking up some groceries,” he answered, his voice steady but tinged with confusion. “What’s the issue?”
The officer cut him off before he could say more. “I’m the one asking the questions,” the officer barked. “You know, people like you don’t typically belong around here. You look like you’re up to something.”
Vernell’s face tightened as he absorbed the officer’s words. He had been stopped countless times before, but this felt different. There was an edge to the officer’s voice—an undertone of bias. The second officer, leaning against the squad car, said nothing, merely crossing his arms and sizing up Vernell like he was some sort of threat.
Vernell felt his anger rising. He had witnessed this scenario far too often—older Black men being unjustly singled out simply because of the color of their skin, presumed guilty without cause.
“Are you serious right now?” Vernell asked, his tone steady but laced with frustration. “You’re going to hassle me for no reason? I’m just trying to get home.”
The officers weren’t backing down. “We’ve got a few questions for you,” the younger officer pressed, moving closer to Vernell as if to assert dominance. “Do you mind if we check your bag? You’re acting suspicious.”
Vernell wasn’t going to tolerate it. He was an adult, a father, and a man who had endured far too much of this kind of treatment. “You’re not touching my bag,” he said firmly, his voice unwavering. “I’m not breaking any laws, and I’m not going to stand here and be disrespected like this.”
In that moment, something inside Vernell shifted. He wasn’t about to let these officers push him around. He pulled out his phone, dialing a number he knew by heart. As the phone rang, the officers exchanged confused glances, clearly unprepared for him to take any kind of action.
Vernell held the phone to his ear, his gaze unwavering as he stared down the officers. “Yeah, I’m going to need some help here,” he said, his voice oozing quiet confidence. “Put your supervisor on the line.”
The officer, still unaware of the severity of the situation, flashed a smirk. “You really think a phone call is going to change anything?” he taunted, his arrogance unmistakable.
Vernell remained silent, waiting as the call was answered on the other end. When the voice picked up, he spoke with the assuredness of someone who had seen it all. “This is Vernell Varnado. You might know me as Snoop Dogg’s father. These two officers are harassing me for no reason, and I think it’s time someone gets involved.”
The officer’s cocky demeanor vanished the moment Vernell dropped his son’s name. The shift in tone was immediate, and Vernell could almost sense the officer’s unease. He knew the name—and the power it carried.
“What’s happening, Mr. Varnado?” a composed voice inquired on the other end, clearly someone in authority. Vernell swiftly outlined the situation, describing how he was being targeted without cause, solely because of how he looked.
The officer, now aware that Vernell had contacted someone higher up, started to falter. He stumbled over his words, attempting to justify his actions, but Vernell had no patience for his explanations.
“Listen, you two are heading for serious consequences. This isn’t the way to treat anyone, and I won’t stand here letting you believe you can intimidate me,” Vernell stated, his tone firm and commanding.
As Vernell hung up, the dynamic around the officers changed instantly. They could no longer dismiss the gravity of the situation. The younger officer’s arrogant demeanor dissolved as he grasped the significance of who he was confronting, and the supervisor on the call had already initiated steps to address the issue.
The officers, now visibly uncomfortable and offering apologies in a flurry, began to retreat, trying to downplay their actions with insincere words. But Vernell wasn’t swayed by their empty apologies. Without a second glance, he turned and walked away, leaving the two officers standing there, their futures now uncertain.
By the time Vernell got home, news of the incident had already spread. The officers’ behavior had been reported, and word traveled fast through the ranks. Thanks to Vernell’s swift thinking and his connections, the officers were placed on administrative leave, and an internal investigation was swiftly initiated. It didn’t take long for the fallout to occur—both officers were ultimately fired for their misconduct.
With the steadfast backing of his son Snoop Dogg, Vernell ensured that this wasn’t just a personal win, but a powerful message to anyone who thought they could harass or mistreat others without facing repercussions. The lesson was undeniable: you never know who you’re up against, and sometimes, a single phone call can turn everything around.
